Fergus Falls Vicinity Rest Area Site Selection

Brief description: MnDOT proposes to construct a new rest area, or a pair of rest areas, to serve eastbound and westbound Interstate 94 (I-94) in the Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
1. The new rest area(s) will replace the current Hansel Lake rest area located on westbound I-94 at reference post 68.8 and will replace the demolished Lake Iverson rest area on eastbound I-94 at reference post 59.9.
A. The Hansel Lake rest area building ranks second worst in condition in the state and it has been determined it is not cost effective to rehabilitate the rest area and the land base is not conducive for expansion.
B. The former Iverson Lake rest area property was demolished and abandoned due to issues related to an adjacent lake.
2. The new rest area(s) should occur between reference post (ref. pt.) 50 and 60 to accomplish the MnDOT’s Rest Area Program rest area spacing interval of between 50 and 60 miles.
A. The State has identified and studied eleven sites between ref. pt. 50 and 60 on I-94.
B. Four of the eleven sites appear to be most suitable for rest area development and are the sites under consideration for this project.
