The State of Minnesota, Fish and Wildlife Division at the Dept. of Natural Resource (DNR) intends to purchase 10 Necklace style collars with GPS and VHF capabilities with Telemetry Solutions.

The proposed of this purchase to efficiently track pheasants remotely for research. While GPS tracking devices have long been available to large mammals and large birds, they have only recently been offered in a configuration suitable for pheasants. Animal welfare guidelines restrict the weight of transmitters to 3% of body mass (approx. 20g) and use a necklace-style attachment method. Alternatives such as backpackstyle mounts or glue-on transmitters either increase mortality in pheasants or are not durable enough to remain attached for the duration of my research. Furthermore, models that include a solar panel for power (rather than battery-only) are unsuitable for pheasants because pheasants are cryptic, concealing themselves in tall vegetation which would most likely prevent the solar panel from functioning properly. Finally we must be able to access the data remotely, without recapturing the bird as recapturing pheasants is a time consuming and expensive process and would further stress the individual animals.

If anyone has any concerns regarding this single source opportunity you must contact Jeeneng Vang via e-mail to Jeeneng.vang@state.mn.us before December 8, 2023, at 12:00 PM CT (Central Time). Note: Include the reference number and title of the posting in the subject line.
