Work Zone Training Plan – Phases 2/3

Brief description: Work zones can create unexpected situations for the traveling public. The need for well-planned and placed traffic control devices is paramount as these devices are the last and sometimes the only line of defense between the motoring public and heavy equipment, hazards, or workers. Currently there is not a systematically organized, continuous, and easily accessible training resources to address the risk of work zone related accidents. In 2018, the State formed a Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) to develop a work zone training program. Phase I of the project involved the TAP working to identify training needs, assessing available training courses, and determining gaps between needs and existing work zone trainings. The needs for work zone training were determined by a series of data gathering efforts, including: listening sessions with state and local agencies and consultants, individual meetings with three private utility companies, and an online survey of local city, county, and state construction, maintenance, and design staff. A work zone training plan that addressed the needs identified was developed in Phase 1. The State is requesting responses for Phases 2/3 of this project which involves implementing a multi-faceted system to provide work zone training that meets the needs of different participants who are involved in transportation related activities.
